Michael Eunice Obituary

EUNICE, Michael "Mike" Joseph, 79, of Richmond, passed away suddenly on October 30th, 2023. Mike is survived by his wife, Ridley Kellam. Mike and Ridley spent the last 15 years together truly happy, watching the sunset over the Piankatank, congregating with church friends, and hosting family gatherings where Mike exhibited his innate skill at writing eloquent and sometimes mischievous holiday poems. Mike adored Ridley and, above all, loved spending time with his family.

Mike is now reunited with his parents, Marie and Joseph Eunice, and his dear cousin, Sam Assaid. He leaves behind his three girls, Lisa Eunice (Hubert) Peek, Catherine Eunice (Sean) McPhilomy, and Beth Eunice, along with his treasured grandchildren, Annemarie and Thomas Peek. He leaves a legacy of love to Ridley's children, Jacob and Katherine Fleck, Molly and John Shumadine, Dean and Niki Fleck, and their children, who he cherished as his own: Ava Dean, Brian, Kellam, Libby, Maggie, Nell, Dean, Jack, and Rand. His beloved sister and brother, Donna Gilbert and David Eunice, and his best friend and cousin, Carlisle Bannister, continue to hold his memory close.

Mike's heart knew no boundaries when it came to family. In his early years, Mike proudly graduated from Roanoke Catholic School, later attending Virginia Tech as a member of the Corp of Cadets. It was there that he ignited his lifelong passion for Hokie Football. During the Vietnam War, Mike's dedication led to him earning the Bronze Star while serving as a Captain in the Air Force in Thailand.

Affectionately known as Bub by many, Mike eventually found his calling as a builder in Richmond. His love for creating warm and inviting homes for families continued into his retirement, where he generously offered his skills to anyone in need, earning him the nickname "Pro Bono Contractor." When not working, he enjoyed leisurely rounds of golf with friends and found solace by the riverbanks until the very end.

The charismatic "fixer of everything" had a way of drawing people in with his infectious smile and captivating storytelling, leaving them wondering, "Is he really that nice?" The answer, without a doubt, was "yes."

Mike's family invites you to join them in celebrating his life on Tuesday, November 7th, at 2 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to his beloved church, Trinity United Methodist Church.

Met Mike at the PGC, in Hartfield, Va. You're right in the obit, he can't really be this nice. Gonna sell me something ! Then I ran into him at Urbanna Lumber. I was then catching on to "Gee, he really is that nice". Then I inspected his house he built outside of Urbanna for the county. Still nice ! A complete gentleman, and yes, a really great and humble man. Until I read his obit, I never knew of his service record. He is now in heaven with all the other heroes !!!!!! Gone too soon !!!

Mike and my brother Jimmy were best of friends and my family considered him our fifth brother and loved him like one. Seeing his picture brings a tear to my eye as I can't forget what a wonderful guy he was. Rest In Peace Mike and go get Jimmy for a golf or basketball game and give him a hug from me.

Michael came out of retirement and made our project doable. Full of great ideas and imaginative fixes, he magically made things happen, always with a smile or a funny story and willingness to be of help.

Then there was the golf. Playing a round with Michael was always punctuated with an occasional shot down the middle, which he gladly applauded, and the golf played was always in the Rockville area and celebrated with the " best fried chicken in the world" followed by a phone call to Carlisle to let him in on the "discovery."

Fun was always part of being with Mike and he will be sorely missed. We send our heartfelt love and affection to Ridley and his family and pray God takes him where he will surely bring joy to his loving family and friends.
