Charles Lowe Obituary

LOWE, Charles Oswald passed away on August 27, 2024, at Bayfront Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida. "Charlie" was born to Clowney Oswald Lowe and Myrtle Harris Lowe on February 11, 1938, at Mound Park Hospital in St. Petersburg. A sixth generation Floridian and direct descendent of the McMullen and Harris families, who were among the earliest settlers in Pinellas County. Charlie was a proud lifelong resident of St. Peterburg who deeply loved his community, his family and his friends. Charlie graduated from St. Petersburg High School and went on to receive his BS in Psychology and an MBA from Emory University. Charles embarked on a successful career in finance, which ultimately led him to Wall Street in New York City. There, he met his future wife, Laurie McGhee, on a blind date. They were married in December 1969 and returned to St. Petersburg in 1973 to raise their family. Charlie enjoyed a long and notable career in finance, working with Union Trust National Bank and later retiring from Nations Bank. A prominent presence in the community, his professional achievements were paralleled by his active involvement in local civic and social organizations, including the Suncoasters, Dragon's Club, University Club, Museum of Fine Arts, St. Pete Yacht Club and the Vinoy Club. In his retirement, Charlie cherished his summer home in Highlands Country Club and pursued his passions for bridge - becoming a Life Master -croquet, and indulging in fine food, wine, and travel with his family. Charlie is survived by his wife of 54 years, Laurie; son, Charles Harris Lowe; and daughter, Laurie Lowe Nelson; his three beloved grandchildren, Savannah Louise Nelson, Charles William Nelson, and Norman Harris Lowe; sister, Judith Lowe Wells; nephews, Charles Lowe, Mike Lowe, Frank Wells, and Brett Wells; and numerous cousins. He was predeceased by his parents and two siblings, Clowney Eugene Lowe and Katherine Lowe Carreker. Charlie also leaves behind his cherished standard poodle, Bella. A celebration of Charlie's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio and Tampa Bay Watch.

Charlie was my "All Time" favorite bridge partner!   Not because of his bridge skill, which like most everything about Charlie was well above average, but because of his stories, of which he had 10 thousand, if not 100 thousand, all wonderful and so colorful.  .

As a sixth generation Pinellas County native, Charlie qualified as a true Florida "Cracker", and with my heritage a multi-generational Georgia "Cracker", I appreciated Charlie's unique story telling skill very  early into our relationship.   His time spent at Emory in Atlanta involved many a foray into South Georgia Cracker enclaves with college friends or fraternity brothers, each which produced many a story that Charlie loved to share.

Early in our relationship, an opportunity to play bridge involved a sch-rumpus "Laurie Lowe" meal, followed by hours of bridge, served with un-ending stories, beginning with his WWII stories of St. Petersburg blackouts and patrols with his Constable relative, weekends in Dublin or Albany, GA, while at Emory, or on Long Island, once he discovered NYC.  Half a century later, bridge was tournaments in Greenville, Charlotte or Orlando, or the best of all, at their Highlands NC home, replete with Charlie's stories.

Cheryl joins me in extending our condolences to Laurie, Harris and daughter Laurie.  Charlie will be missed.  RIP, Good Friend.
