Carla Hearst Obituary

Carla Kay Litaker Hearst, 47, joined the church eternal on Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, at Gordon Hospice House in Statesville, following a valiant 16 month struggle with breast cancer. She was born Oct. 23, 1962, the daughter of Betty Jo H. Litaker and the late Carl Adams Litaker. On April 29, 1989, she was married to Leo Vincent Hearst III, who survives her. Mrs. Hearst was a graduate of Statesville High School and of Salem College, Winston-Salem. While at Salem, she was a cross country runner and was a piano accompanist for the Salem Academy Choir. A lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Statesville, Carla was faithful and devoted to her church. While growing up she participated in the youth group and as an adult she was a faithful member of many of the church's committees, the church council, the call committee for the present pastor, and a member and soloist of the choir. Almost from birth Carla loved music, either listening to or playing it. One of her favorite things was singing with the Mitchell Community College Choir. Carla was employed with Orchard Software Co., Indianapolis, Ind., and worked from her home. An inseparable couple, Carla and Leo enjoyed many activities together, including golfing, bowling, riding their Harley Davidson motorcycle, singing in the church choir, traveling, and entertaining their friends. A favorite activity of theirs was watching TV with their beloved black cats, Jack and Judy. Carla developed close ties with classmates from Salem College and following her cancer diagnosis, this group became known as the Princess Warriors. Later, others were added to this elite group who have been a source of comfort and support. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church with the Rev. John Jones III officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Michael Dussault, Norman Kidby, Tim Cress, Darrel Brown, Marshall Hearst, Lamar Austin, Chandler Bryan, Tim Crawford. Honorary pallbearers will be Emory Pike, Robert Forrorow, Chris Slentz, Dr. Ralph Bentley, Dr. Bruce Harris, Tony Maxwell, David Pope, Bill Coffey, Larry Nichols, Dorothy Slentz, Marjorie Pike, Kendra Kidby, Amy Henderson Hayes, Tonya Brittain and Sandra Shelson, Ann DeStefano, Beth Forrorow and Teri Dussault. The family will receive friends from 3-6 p.m. this evening at Nicholson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to any organization supporting the cure of cancer; the Iredell County Humane Society; Gordon Hospice House; St. John's Lutheran Church; or to the charity of the donor's choice. Nicholson Funeral Home is serving the family of Carla Litaker Hearst. The family would like to express sincerest appreciation to Dr. Susan Melin and Alicia DeTroye PA, Jorge and Vicki Garcia, and all other medical personnel at Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital, for the meticulous and devoted care given to Carla during her treatment and stay there.

Leo,

What can be said about a woman like Carla. She was an exceptional person. Multi-talented, smart and most importantly a beautiful soul. She was always so kind to everyone and a welcoming presence. I remember our trip to the mountains and her first ride in the rain. She was a real trooper for coming down that mountain in the rain. We are truly blessed to know her. We will miss her dearly but know that God has her in his arms and in his angel choir.

I haven't seen Carla in several years, but in my minds eye I can still clearly see her radiant smile, her laugh and her exuberance for life. We played music together in high school and she contributed to my love of music a great deal. What a fabulous and giving person ... she made the world a better place.

As Carla, God's Precious Loved One, is rejoicing eternally with our Heavenly Father, her Spirit will remain as strong and as vibrant as ever within each of our hearts. Dear Mrs. Litaker,
My fondest memories of Carla will always be those of our days together in band at Satesville, and - given the number of hours we spent practicing - there are lots of those! There is one particular thing that leaps forward from all my memories, however: Carla's smile. She was so happy, completely vivacious and always postitive - what a gift to us!

From the stories and reports I've heard over the years, it seems her radiant outlook never ended. Thank you for bringing such wonderful addition into my life. As the days and weeks pass, my hope is that you will be able to find great joy and a lasting sense of peace as you come to know what a lasting impact Carla has had on so many people.

Love,

January 25, 2010

I want to extend my sympathies to Mrs. Litaker. I was a year ahead of Carla in school and was the "other girl" trombone player. Carla was such fun and after reading her caringbridge journal I have found so much to admire her for. I have regrets that I did not connect with her sooner and known her as the lovely lady that she become.
Thoughts and prayers for you and Leo,

Carla was such a wonderful, caring friend of mine in high school. Her beautiful musical talent and positive outlook on life added so much to both the Chorus and Rainbows. I am so sorry for your loss and will continue to keep you in my prayers.

Dear Leo
Vicky and I want to extend our deepest sympathies to you and the rest of the family. It’s impossible to express in words how saddened we were to receive the news of Carla’s passing
We are eternally grateful to have gotten the pleasure and honor of getting to know you both. Her incredible love of life, love of family & friends, and valiant struggle will forever remain as an example for all of us here at the center to admire. If nothing else her “cautiously optimistic” approach and determination to fight her cancer solidly reaffirms our desire to help others just like her.
Please let me know if there is anything that Vicky or I can do to help, either you or her family, during this very difficult time. You and Carla are, and forever will be, in our thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely,
Jorge & Vicky Garcia

Carla, was, indeed, a precious soul, a delight to her parents and all who knew her. I first knew her through her parents but then as a student at Statesville High School. Such a lovely, lovely lady and one with a kindness to everyone. As fellow breast cancer survivors, she remained positive and full of hope. Carla will be missed and remembered often by so many.
