Louis Soberanis Obituary

Louis Robert Soberanis
July 5, 1930 - October 18, 2023
Louis Robert Soberanis was born in San Francisco, CA on July 5th, 1930 to Roberto Soberanis Serrano from Acapulco, Mexico, and Rosa Obeso also from Mexico.

He attended a Catholic grade school and graduated from St. Ignatius High School in San Francisco in 1948. He then went to UCSF for several years while being a part-time playground director in San Francisco. Eventually he joined the USAF and was sent to Lackland and Kelly AFB, both in Texas, before he was sent to Libya for flight training. He left the USAF ranked as a captain.

On route back to the US, he stopped in Germany to purchase a 1958 Mercedes Benz and had it shipped to San Francisco. It became his pride and joy. He drove it everywhere-from work at the Federal Aviation Administration in San Francisco, to periodic FAA trainings in Oklahoma City, to church on Sundays. Today, it still has a special parking place in the barn.

Lou's first wife was Mary Tsekery, whom he met and married in 1960 in San Francisco. They had 4 children: David, Anna Marie, Mary, and Louis, Jr. In 1974, when the children were still young and with the help of a family loan, they bought an 18-acre plot of land in Sebastopol, CA, on which they built a house and a barn. The kids used the land to raise pigs, ride go carts, pasture horses, and cherish their family dog, Brutus. Lou and Mary were fortunate to live together on the land until she passed away of cancer in 1989. They had been married for 29 years. Around her death, he also retired from the FAA after 32 years of service.

Five years later, in 1994, Lou met and married Peggy Gorman. Together they remained in Lou's house and made a home for the two of them there. They too were married for 29 years. Peggy was Lou's loyal companion and caretaker until he passed away on October 18, 2023. In addition to his wife and four children, Lou is survived by his nine grandsons Tyler, Blake, Luke, Jonathan, Nathaniel, Cy, Paige, Noah, Zachary, and his one granddaughter, Grace.

Even though Lou was a San Franciscan through and through, he loved living in the country in Sebastopol. His later years were spent on projects for the house and enjoying the quiet of the land with his wife, Peggy.

In the spring, his ashes will join Brutus' under "the big oak tree," one of his favorite spots to look out to from his recliner in the living room. His bones will ultimately rest on Bones Road.

The Sobranis family - I got to know Lou during my years working for an Internal medicine group in Santa Rosa. He was an incredibly kind man with a wonderful sense of humor. He was one of my favorite patients and always looked forward to seeing him. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
