John Akers Obituary

What an amazing life he's lived! I've only know Dr. Akers as a patient for the past four years as he was my oral surgeon for several dental implants. From the first time I met him he was not only professional but very personable. The ongoing consults and implant visits reinforced my impressions. I last saw him on July 1st of this year for yet another implant consult, my sixth. I remember him telling me that "you are about to pass me up!" I've had a 'ton' of dental work over the years but have never met or known a dental professional that was as caring as Dr. Akers. He had put together a top-notch and superb staff. When I received a call from his office that they needed to reschedule my appointment as he had a sudden medical issue that was requiring him to retire I knew something was seriously wrong. After meeting with the suggested oral surgeon I was seriously shocked at the news of Dr. Akers passing. My sincerest regrets and prayers to his family and all of the staff at Florida Oral Surgery. The world lost a true professional and human being. Rest In Peace Dr. Akers!

A Patient!

I first met John 38 years ago when I opened my practice in Orange City.
John became a mentor and a good friend. He was always ready with great advice and eager to help in any way possible. We went on many fishing trips and I got to know him well outside of dentistry.
John was an exceptionally gifted surgeon and a wonderful person. He did work on my mother and my father. My mother thought the world of him.
John will be missed. Beth and I will mourn his passing.
Our prayers are with Jennifer and his family.

John was one of the first people I met when I first came to town to start my Pediatric Dentistry practice. He took my out to lunch at the Sea Harvest Marina in New Smyrna Beach, welcomed me to town and took me under his wing. The guy had the golden touch...did everything well from sports to academics to relationships. He practiced Oral Surgery the "old school" way...take care of the patient first and foremost. But I have to say, the best thing that he ever taught me was how to optimally manage a fish sandwich. First ask the waitress for servings of both cocktail and tartar sauces. Mix the 2 ingredients in a 50/50 slurry. Apply liberally to the bun, not directly to the fried fish, reassemble and enjoy! He will be missed.

My condolences to Jennifer, Carol and the entire Akers family. I first met Dr. Akers when he removed my daughter's baby teeth back in 1990. He was so kind and gentle. Since then he helped me with a couple of issues as well and I could never thank him enough. I am so sorry.

Dr. Akers just did major surgery for me starting in February of this year. I was so saddened to hear that he passed away. Dr. Akers is the only oral surgeon I went to. I remember his office on Mason Avenue. Dr. Akers is/ was a great dentist and so caring and loved his patients. My condolences to the family. He will be greatly missed. God Bless.

Jon and I were KA brothers at PC. He was a wonderful and fun friend. I and all his brothers pray for God´s peace for his family as they celebrate a life well lived

In 1969 as a freshman KA pledge at Presbyterian College, I was blessed to come under the influence of John Akers. By his words and actions he quietly set an example of servant leadership and Christian manhood. I, and so many others, will never forget him and consider ourselves blessed to have had him cross our paths. Rest in peace Brother John Akers.

John was one of the best friends I have. A leader in everything he did. He is missed in many ways by his Presbyterian College and KA colleagues. Peace to his family.

I was a suite roommate of John in 1970 at Presbyterian College and also a KA Brother-------What a great Gentleman he was and friend-----God Bless John and his family------

It is truly hard to put into words our deep sadness in the loss of John (or Dr. John as my kiddos called him) So many years, so many memories, so many struggles that we shared. But, for sure the happy times far outweighed them all.Their deep love for family and their family travels which they shared with us in photos, is just one facet of their lives. I could go on and on but today we are just thankful to have shared in the gift of neighbors and friends that we received when we moved across the street from them 44 years ago. We shall continue to watch over Jennifer and be here for her. Love you John, rest easy dear friend, we shall miss you.

Dr Ackers was such a kind human soul. I was blessed to have him work on me and I knew I was in the best hands. He certainly left behind a legacy to be forever cherished. May God wrap his arms around his family and to all whom he touched.
