William Henry Ashburn (W.H.) of Madison, Georgia, passed away on Nov. 1, 2023, following a lengthy illness. W.H. was born in Arab, Alabama, on July 15, 1935, to the late Amos Howard Ashburn and Ila Bodine Ashburn. Mr. Ashburn was a graduate of Jacksonville State University (Alabama) with a degree in Music Education. He served as band director at Jacksonville High School, Rabun County High School in Clayton, Morgan County High School in Madison, and Oconee County High School in Watkinsville. Many of his students have expressed how important he and music were to their lives. In a personal letter, one wrote, "I am confident that I am one of countless others whose lives were/are enriched by your unquestioned personal integrity, generously shared talent, steadfast encouragement, and uplifting good sense of humor." Another posted, "He created a musical environment in which everyone could feel a real spirit of teamwork and camaraderie and belonging. For that, I am eternally grateful." W.H. earned his Master's Degree in Administration from the University of Georgia in Athens. He then served as Assistant Principal at Oconee County Middle School and spent the last 10 years of his career as Assistant Superintendent in Morgan County.
W.H. was a member of the Army National Guard for 41 years. He enlisted at the age of 18 as a Private and retired at the rank of Colonel. He served in numerous units in Alabama and Georgia. He was an active member of the American Legion Calvin George Post #37, where he started the Color Guard that marched in local parades and performed official duties at many funerals and other events.
W.H. directed many church choirs, beginning with the Christian Church in Anniston (Alabama), followed by the United Methodist Church in Clayton (Georgia). He served as Deacon and Choir Director in the Madison Baptist Church and was an Elder and Choir Director in the Madison Presbyterian Church. He and Kathleen Reid organized what became the Ashburn Chorale, a local group that performed concerts and made special appearances at various churches and events. A few of W.H.'s local musical contributions include directing a male quartet that performed the National Anthem at an Atlanta Braves' game, organizing several "Evenings of Music" at the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center, and directing instrumental groups for the "Fun Follies."
W.H. loved to play golf. He also enjoyed his neighborhood card group, who met in his basement for years. He had a workshop, where he handcrafted furniture and smaller items. Skills he developed during his many summer jobs ranged from laying rock to paving roads to managing swimming pools. After retirement, he loved to travel with friends and family. He and Barbara visited several countries during their travels.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Schrimscher) of 67 years, daughter Amanda Ashburn Durden (Danny) of Glennville, son Bill Ashburn of Madison, and son Mike Ashburn (Cheri) of Lawrenceville.
