Mary Angell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 9, 2025.
Mary Christine Angell was born on August 29, 1989 in Byron Center, Michigan. Mary was a loving daughter, sister and friend to many. The light she brought to this world cannot be calculated or summarized in this obituary, but we can try with your loving comments and stories.

As a Michigan native and star student-athlete, Mary set state records en route to a state discus title and three state championships in the shot put. As a student-athlete at the University of Kentucky, Mary was an NCAA qualifier in the discus. She earned multiple academic honors from the USTFCCCA, SEC and CoSIDA and made the finals of the Olympic Trials in 2012.

Mary earned her bachelor's degree in kinesiology from Kentucky in 2012 and earned a master of education in postsecondary administration and student affairs at USC in 2016. Mary had an impressive and successful career in operations and student services for track and field programs including UCF, USC, UCSD and Vanderbilt.

Mary loved staying active - from hiking in California to her beach volleyball league in Nashville and walking dogs in her spare time. Mary was in constant pursuit of being the best friend and person she could be. She left us too soon but made the most of her life here on Earth. Mary's immediate family, including Laurie Angell, Sam Angell and Julie Angell, would love to see your favorite photos and memories of Mary. If you were lucky enough to know Mary in your lifetime, you know that this is an unimaginable loss and we will have her in our hearts for the rest of our lives.

In Mary's honor, we suggest making donations to the ACLU, ASPCA or your local animal rescue.

Mary Angell, My Daughter's College Track and Field Coach and Friend just left her Family and Friends far too early. Mary was a Positive and Vibrant Force in the lives of those who we're lucky enough to know her. https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/legacyremembers/mary-angell-obituary?id=58587644

All of our love, support, and thoughts are with her family and friends. As we are all morning our losses and appreciating our valuable time with her, may each and every individual remember the valuable life lessons shared with her. Make the world a better place, as Mary did! This song is a very appropriate theme for our collective grieving.

I am absolutely stunned and heartbroken to hear of Mary´s passing. I had the privilege of being Mary´s classmate at USC. She was always friendly and her smile was a warm presence in the classroom. Mary will be deeply missed and never forgotten.

Mary was the Director of Operations at USC during my time on the track and field team. We bonded over our shared height and love for the discus. After I graduated, our friendship grew stronger, and we even spent Thanksgiving together with some of her family in San Diego in 2016.

Mary was kind, funny, and ambitious. Although we lost touch over the past few years, we would occasionally message and catch up on life. I always enjoyed her beach volleyball updates and the fun photos she shared. When I visited Nashville this past April, I tried to meet up with her, but our schedules didn´t align. I never imagined it would be our last chance to see each other.

Mary, you were deeply loved and will be truly missed.
I am sending love and healing to her family during this hard time.

Mary was such a light when we traveled together with UCF´s track & field team. We roomed together most road trips, and I have such fond memories from our trip to nationals in Eugene that year - sharing dinner together at a cool restaurant we found, venturing to the Nike store with the rest of our staff, and long but happy days at Hayward. My sincerest condolences to her family and friends. She, and you, are in my thoughts and prayers.

Mary,
Our hearts were shocked and broken when the message came through. As we processed, memories flooded our thoughts and somehow both sorrow at your loss and joy of knowing you were able to coexist.

What a privilege to know you as both a teammate and a friend. Although you dominated as an athlete, you were never too proud to look to those around you and build them up. You showed so much kindness and encouragement to those younger than you looking to excel in athletics. Your example and kind heart was unparalleled to anyone else.

The time you poured into athletics was unmatched, and earned you so many well deserved titles and awards. Each day you pushed yourself to be a better version than you were the day before. Because of the dedication you and your Dad had to the sport, the BC throws program was not only recognized through the state, but it gave many student athletes of all different backgrounds a place to belong. Watching you pull a crowd and compete at a state level to watching you compete at the SCC championships will be memories that are cherished forever.

Memories of the barn, eating cowboy caviar and spending time at the lake will live in our hearts.

To Sam, Laurie and Julie, your family holds an incredibly special spot in our hearts. Our love and prayers go out to you constantly. Our hearts are broken and we grieve with you.

Mary and I were close friends since 5th grade. For the past 26 years, Mary was a wonderful friend who was always there for me. Distance separated us, but we got together every time she came to town. I will cherish the memories that we made together forever and am blessed to have been your friend. Mary, I miss you and love you. Sam, Laurie, and Julie, I pray for you often.

I had the pleasure of being on Mary's team for HS track & field and volleyball. Her drive was motivating and contagious. She was quiet but uplifting and positive. I loved blocking next to her as she would always cover anything I missed ;) I loved her humble attitude. Heartbroken about this terrible loss. The world is a darker place without you, Mary.

Mary was one of my greatest friends and I hold all of our memories so close to my heart. From doubles partners, to visiting her on Spring Break, to beach days at the lake, and to all the sushi dates - I will never forget our special times together.

To Sam, Laurie, and Julie - you were a second family to me. I grew up doing things with you all and I am forever grateful for all of your generosity and all of the love you showed to me growing up. I am deeply sorry for your loss. I have been praying for you all and thinking of you all every single day since I heard the news. My heart breaks and grieves with you.

Mary - I love you and I miss you.

What a blessing it was to coach "scary" Mary who was actually the sweetest and most humble player on the court. I will remember your laughter, silliness, competitive spirit, your leadership and kindness. Give Curt a hug for me, until we meet again! Rest easy Mary, we will always love and miss you

Mary- you were such a light and your infectious smile when you came to house/cat sit gave me confidence that Lyla was in good company - and yes she does miss you, especially her back rubs in the morning. May you rest in peace knowing that you were so loved by many and how you touched each and everyone of us. God has you Mary, an angel, blessed and grateful for our short time knowing one another.

I love you, Mary and very much wish you were still here. Thank you so much for all of the fun memories and the laughter, especially in college. I´ll cherish the fond memories and never forget your lovely, kind-hearted nature. Rest easy, girl. I´ll miss you so much.

I will always cherish our runs at Silver Strand, our hikes all across Southern California, and the countless games of spike ball and beach doubles. I´ll never forget Sundays watching Game of Thrones while doing your laundry, Brian messing with your dating apps, or how Trigger cried every time you walked in the door.

We showed up for each other, even when life took us across the country and back again. We shared stories, dreams, fears, victories, and heartbreaks at Kentucky and life after.

Rest easy, Mary. And get a freaking dog already-no excuses. I´ll carry you with me always, and forever I´ll wish you were here.

I took a Siesta Key trip with Mary on a volleyball adventure a few years back, and it´s a pretty great memory I have with her. She encouraged me to move away, follow my dreams, and continue loving the sport no matter what. Mary definitely hated when I beat her that day because she´s that competitive;), but she had a heart of gold and was always such a good friend. There are many other memories I could share, but our airport chat was one that I´ll remember and cherish for awhile. She was one of the first that challenged me to the best version of myself. I will miss her at Nashville Beach and Marshall Madness dearly. We plan to honor her at this year´s Marshall Madness, and I will make sure we have a moment of silence. Fly high, Mary. Love ya, girl.
