David Krieger Obituary

March 27, 1942 - December 7, 2023 David Malcom Krieger, man of peace, passed away on December 7, 2023 in Santa Barbara and left the world with one less champion.
David was born in Los Angeles on March 27, 1942 and is a graduate of Occidental College, where he studied Psychology. David was getting his PhD in Political Science from the University of Hawaii when he met and married Carolee, his wife of 57 years. He did get the PhD, too.
David studied in Japan as part of his PhD work and was so moved by what he experienced in Hiroshima and Nagasaki that he dedicated the rest of his life to abolishing nuclear weapons and achieving peace. He was drafted into the army during the Vietnam War, but sued for conscientious objector status.
In 1972, David and Carolee moved to Santa Barbara, and went on to raise their three children there. In 1982, together with Frank Kelly, Wally Drew, and two others, David founded the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation. This was to be his proudest accomplishment. David led the Foundation until his retirement in 2019. His work, educating, advocating, writing, and speaking all over the world on the dangers of the nuclear age and the insanity of the nuclear arms race helped advance the cause of peace and nuclear abolition. David Krieger was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize ten separate years.
David was a man of thought, conviction, and honor. He wanted to make the world safer, more peaceful, and ultimately kinder and more just. He never stopped believing this was possible. All along, he wrote poetry, played tennis, and taught karate.
David is survived by his wife, Carolee; his three children, Jeffrey (Claire), Jonathon (Kristen), and Mara Sweeney (Dan); his eight grandchildren, Ryan (Clara), Eric, Zachary, Andrew, Nathaniel Sweeney, Alyse, Addison Sweeney, and Alice Sweeney; his great-grandson, Louis (son of Ryan and Clara); his younger brother, Gary; and many nieces and nephews.

I knew David when we were both members of the 25th infantry division in Hawaii. David, Robbie Robertson, and myself were a trio against the war in Vietnam. I was greatly impressed by David, inner, serenity and peacefulness, and even though I have not been in contact with him since our service, I have frequently had occasion to remember him as a friend and an inspiration. My heartfelt wishes go to Carolee and their children.

David Krieger was a hero to me. He served as my editor at the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation; I was a volunteer journalist for the organization who conducted interviews with nuclear experts and submitted them as articles to the NAPF website over the course of several years. I also had the pleasure and honor to meet him in person at an outstanding Peace Leadership Conference in Santa Barbara in 2012. This soft-spoken, humble man was deeply committed to world peace and the eventual elimination of nuclear weapons from the globe. He saw it as his mission. Working with him on stories was a delight and I learned so much from him. The world has lost a great leader. My sincere sympathies to his family, friends and former colleagues. There is no doubt that he is missed.
