David Riley Obituary

David Owen Riley, age 79, of Sykesville, went to be with his Lord and Savior, on Monday, October 2, 2023, surrounded by his family at the Dove House in Westminster, MD. He was born on March 6, 1944, in Newport News, VA to the late Benjamin Ralph Riley and Lorraine Owen Riley. He was the loving husband of 57 years to Dinah Blanchard Riley. David was a 1962 graduate of Newport News High School. He worked for several years at the former Newport News Ship Building and Dry Dock Company. He then went on to have a long career as the buyer for Scan Contemporary Furniture, traveling the world procuring furnishings for the company. David was a man of faith. He was a charter member of Friendship Baptist Church, Sykesville where he had served on the finance committee and chaired the counting committee. He was also a very community minded man and had been active in the Exchange Club of Denbigh, VA when he lived there. He was active with the Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department administration for many years, and with the Liberty High School Instrumental Music Boosters while his daughters were in high school. For several years, he played on a senior golf league and enjoyed watching various sports. Surviving in addition to his wife are daughters and sons-in-law Kelli and Brian Kemp and Melissa and Michael Shipley all of Westminster, sister Cheryl Riley and extended family members of Virginia. He was a loving "Pa" to his grandchildren Nicolas Brian Kemp and wife Kelsea, Riley Michaela Shipley and fiancé Brennan Hare, Caitlin Alexandra Shipley and great-grandchildren Elijah and Noah Kemp. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8pm on Thursday, October 5, 2023, at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville. A funeral service will be held at 1pm on Friday, October 6, 2023, at Friendship Baptist Church, 1391 Sykesville Road, Sykesville, MD with his pastor the Rev. Mark Massey officiating. Interment will follow in Lake View Memorial Park.
