Julie Duffy Obituary

Julie Wells Bowser Birney Duffy passed away peacefully on October 16, 2023, at Compass Hospice having been surrounded by family and friends for the duration of her week-long stay. She is survived by her loving husband of 20 years, Michael Joseph Duffy, daughter Helen Wells Birney, two granddaughters - - Alexis and Jillian - - who loved their "LaLa", step-daughter Caitlin, siblings Cris and Robes, and seven nieces and nephews who all loved "Aunt J." Julie was born on August 9,1959, in Albuquerque, New Mexico to her now deceased parents Carroll Wells and James Robert Bowser, Jr. (Col Ret. USMC). The family moved frequently when Julie was younger until they eventually planted roots in Annapolis, Maryland in 1966. Here, Julie blossomed as a loyal and entrusted friend, developing lifelong friendships including her 57 year friendship with her "bestie" Kate Koeppen, who stuck by Julie's side throughout life's joy's and challenges. After graduating from Annapolis High School in 1977, Julie went on to earn a degree from Cornell Culinary Institute in Bethesda, Maryland at the top of her class. With her innate ability in entertaining and hospitality Julie chose to serve customers instead of management and was integral to helping create the bar scene in downtown Annapolis. With a quick wit and feisty retort, she won people over (and over again). Always a scrappy self-starter, Julie started her own successful business that was inspired by her love of the Islands and created the first mobile Tiki Bar in Annapolis, bringing the Island, the party, and fun to many people throughout the years. Julie will be remembered as a devoted friend, loving wife and mother, generous hostess, and forever an untamed spirit. We look forward to a celebration of Julie's life, date and place, to be announced later. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
