Roy DANIEL Obituary

Born 7th February 1943 Renfrew, Scotland - Died 26 November 2024 Hamilton, New Zealand. Roy was a loved father and father-in-law to 8, grandfather to 7 and beloved husband. A man with strength of character, determination, a love of the outdoors and travelling, fine wine, fast cars, and a twinkle in his eye. Emeritus Professor Daniel's career in biochemistry spanned 35 years, coming to the University of Waikato in 1975 as a lecturer in biochemistry and was made Professor in Biological Sciences in 1984. His work on enzyme properties received international recognition, also doing research in Antarctica. He was one of the founders of the University's Thermophile Research Unit (TRU) and served as Dean of the University's School of Science and Technology from 1987 to 1991. Recognition of Roy's research included Fellowship of the Royal Society Te Apārangi, the title of Emeritus Professor in 2013, and the KuDos Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014. The flag at the University of Waikato was flown at half-mast to mark his passing. A celebration of his life will be on Sunday 15th December 2024, at 1.00pm, at The Pā, Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato, The University of Waikato. All welcome.
