A great lady! I first met Phyllis about 2004 when I was new to Nelson & we discovered mutual interests through Forest & Bird activities. We learned early on we had both been volunteer planters on Motuora Island in the Hauraki Gulf before we had separately each decided to move to Nelson. I understand she had been a member of Warkworth F&B which had initiated the programme to re-forest that island. Although we had never met on any of the Sunday planting trips perhaps we had indeed been on an outing together. She seemed to take me "under her wing" when I was new to Nelson, inviting me to her 80th(?) birthday celebration at Carusoes. We shared transport to meetings, and met frequently as volunteers at the Visitor Centre of the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary. A great hostess for making not only the cups of tea for weeders, but making visitors feel welcome with her cheerful manner.
I'm grateful for her friendship and for the inspiration she was about getting out in the world and exploring and taking opportunities for travel and companionship while we can. I'm sorry to have lost touch with her of late, but I recognised how well and happy she seemed to be after moving to Ernest Rutherford. My condolences to her family on her passing. She has been a gift to the many privileged to have known her. Thank you Phyllis.
