I have only just learned of Ian's passing having been away from Arohena for so long. We were neighbours of the Yates family with the Ellerys being just up the road. On behalf of the Podevin family I offer sincere condolences to Sarah and family. I also understand that your mother Ata passed away last year. So sorry to hear that as well.

He was my friggin idol, and i'd never stop telling people about my crazy uncle. My crazy uncle that ate a thermometor, that makes his own organic drench from apple cider vinegar, that was hypnotised to stop smoking, that lives off the grid and is building a mud hut, that owned a scooby doo dog and a horse called horey and that would talk to me about RPR fertiliser and the generator until my ears fell off.

He was the uncle that taught us to make good use of what you have, to always pay people for their work and pay them well (especially if you yell at them), to get back on ya motorbike ride it up that friggin hill, to catch em, drench em and dag em, he taught us that you can't ride a horse until you've fallen off it 100 times (which i haven't achieved yet), that every bit of bush has been left there for a good reason, in-fact everything is where it is for a good reason. That process is important. That having a good time is even more important and that you actually CAN win arguments by being the loudest in the room.

The Totara tree is a tall, strong and mighty tree that lives for hundreds of years. Totara trees are of great importance in moari tradtion and they hold great mana. The Totara tree has the same meaning to my family.

Very sorry to hear about this. Ian and I were best mates at Arohena Primary school before going our seperate ways. Far too early to leave this world but at least he was doing what he loved when he passed.
