I'm one of Graham's friends. He taught me how to make telescope mirrors, starting when I was 19. Now I am 54. I have a PhD in Physics and have had lead optical technical roles on several of the Wordl's largest telescope, The Large Binocular Telescope, ESO ELT, Giant Magellan Telescope. I've designed and helped build Telescopes and systems around the world. All this started with Graeme. Thanks Mate. Hope things are good out there for you in the quantum foam...

I remember Graham very well even though it was the late 70's when he helped me to build a 6" reflector telescope. He taught me how to grind the lens and we built a stand using scrap iron and old trailer axle, a square tube made from plywood and he gave me an eyepiece.
I was 23 years old.
Graham, you were instrumental in setting me on a life full of curiosity and exploration. thank you so much for your generosity.

Thanks Graham. When I was 10, in 1956, you were a regular visitor as a lumberjack clearing Dad's 5 acres of pine trees. I shadowed you with your chainsaw and blasting powder. You fostered my interest in science, giving me a remarkable microscope you had built, with square wooden tubes and a mirror underneath to catch the light. I enjoyed hours of viewing nature's wonders. Then you lent me your treasured copy of Willey Ley's Conquest of Space with its striking Chesley Bonestall artwork (and years later I have my own copy, bought via the Internet that has today revealed this memorial page). Then 1957 was when we saw Sputnik gliding across the evening sky. You opened my eyes during amazing times. Salve atque vale, my friend.

Cheers Graham. You helped me make a nice 6" dob, which got me started in my science career. Was happy to have dropped by for a cup of tea and a chat with you a couple of times in later years. You led a good life.

He helped me make my first telescope, a 12" reflector I still have (badly in need of repairs) He was a gentleman of the highest order and a hero to me when I was a teenager. I wish I had stayed in contact with him over the years.

A sad loss to New Zealand astronomy and to telescope making. All those years ago Graham, I bought your 24 inch telescope - the hundreds of hours I have enjoyed observing the universe, and the wonderful discussions I have had with you. I feel very sad indeed to have lost a friend. We will meet again Graham and do some observing my friend.

A sad loss for New Zealand astronomy. I shall miss our talks about the Evergreen Universe, old friend. A fond farewell from all of the Franklin District Astronomers past and present. Another star shines in the heavens tonight.

Saddened by the loss of my great friend and mentor Graham. We spent many years and many long hours talking and exploring the sky with a variety of telescopes including the 36". You were always ready to help those that needed help, your generosity and hospitality were second to none. Goodbye mate, the world just got a little darker but the night sky brightened.

Farewell to a grand gentleman who always made time for everyone he met, will be sorely missed. Till we meet again, enjoy watching the universe from the other side - Mark, Mary, Caitlin, Olivia & Harrison Chessum.
