Dear Fred, every time we saw each other, the first thing you always said there is the girl I saved. This was in 1944 in Holland where you belonged to the Allies which fought a huge battle to free us from the Germans. It was a great honour to meet you and chat with you and exchange war experiences from total opposite angles. I will always be thankful of having met you. Thank you again. Hanneke de Graaf

Dearest Fred, you will always remain in my heart. Thank you for sharing your incredible life story with me as a journalist. Your courage, vulnerability, cheeky wit and love for people was a beautiful thing to witness and try to capture as a writer. You have crossed the bar my friend, but will always be remembered with love always, Alison.
