An inspirational mentor, a fine teacher, and a great Catholic. May you rest in peace. My sincere condolences to those he had left behind; but know the legacy of his teaching remains in his students who have gone on to serve the Lord. Warm regards, Peter Fa'afiu (Head Boy 1996, Sacred Heart College).

Travelling in Europe I have just learned of dear Brendan's passing. My deepest sympathy and prayers for all Brendan's loved family. We began our Marist Brother lives together in Invercargill in 1970. He was a great witness to his faith, a true son of Champagnat and the great Puhoi tradition. May he now rest in peace with Jane and be rewarded for the goodness of his life.

Dear Matthew,Celia, Jono and families,
Brendan and I were friends and so were our wives from the time he was appointed principal at Aquinis and I as secondary principal at Bethlehem. After I left Brendan and Jane stayed with us at Portobello where I was gen. manager of Larnach Castle.
Very sadly my wife recently died of precisely the same brain cancer as dear Jane and we rang each other about this and Brendan was a huge help to me as he was during a very difficult time in Tauranga. I am devastated to have just heard this news while in Europe and am so sad not to have been able to come to the Requiem Mass. Please accept my deepest condolences in your sudden loss again. You are very much in my prayers. May the God of all comfort bring his comfort amidst the assurance of eternal life both your dear parents will know together.

Dearest Brendan, you were unique. Your glass was always half full. You loved your family, your job and your sport and your friends and oh, and did I mention sport? You will be so sadly missed along with my dearest friend, your wife Jane, your passing will leave such a gap in so many lives. Too sad, too soon -both of you had so many plans and a wonderful zest for life.
Thinking of your family and wishing I could be there.

A lovely man with warm sense of humour, a cheery laugh and always a very honest, professional colleague. We shared many views on science and religion at Waikato University and at the 'Secondary Teachers' College in the early 1980s. I treasure those conversations and I admire his commitment to his family, his students and to his faith. A rare person indeed.
