John TONKIN-COVELL Obituary

TONKIN-COVELL,
John Raymond:
14.8.1948 - 16.9.2020
"Dr John" finally lost his argument with "C". Treasured husband to Janet, brother to Gaynor; brother-in-law to Greig, and Uncle and Grand- uncle. Thank you to family, friends, colleagues and antagonists who made his life achievements possible, and his legacy to continue. With deep appreciation to St John Ambulance, Tauranga Hospital, Waipuna Hospice and Althorp staff who made his life comfortable at the short end, and for all offers of help and support. At John's request, a private cremation has taken place.

John was my lecturer at Waikato University when I did my 'NZ in WW2' course and then course convener when I was studying for my Post-graduate Diploma in Defence and Strategic Studies. Thanks to John I was able to attend the RNZAEC Military Studies Institute at Trentham as part of my studies. We ate in the Officers Mess together. John changed my life and I went on to complete my Masters in International Relations. Thanks John you will be feasting with the Gods forever.

I had the privilege to be a friend and colleague to John for over thirty years. We taught together, traveled and socialised together and he was my main thesis supervisor and mentor. He was a true and loyal friend. John had a very highly developed sense of honesty and integrity and always acted accordingly. He carried a heavy teaching load in his roles at Massey University and the New Zealand Defence Force and made an enormous contribution to military and international relations education. He was a very good academic and teacher. Many students have benefited from his knowledge and academic supervision, and a generation of NZDF personnel will fondly remember 'JTC'. John was a true gentleman and he faced his illness bravely. John, you have lived a good and selfless life, you have helped many people and left a legacy of knowledge and friendship. Sleep well my dear old friend. Love to Janet and all of John's family.

My heartfelt condolences to JTC's whanau. He was a fantastic friend, colleague and drinking companion. Dedicated to his work and students; JTC will be remembered by many who were lucky enough to have him as their tutor or supervisor during their postgrad studies through the Army. Your travelling days are over JTC but memories of you still travel the country.
