Peter WELLS Obituary

PETER LAURENCE WELLS Peter Wells died suddenly in Sunnybrook Hospital on October 25, 2023, at the age of 79, due to a cumulation of multiple health issues. He will be dearly missed by his wife, Brenda Bolton; his sister, Rosalind Wells; his niece and nephew, Suzie and Peter Leathley; his nephew's children, Gemma and Seamus; and all our loving neighbours, relatives and friends in many countries. Born and raised in Gateshead, England, a place he made sure everyone heard about, he emigrated to Canada in 1970, where he taught mathematics and computer science at Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute. An active sportsman, he coached badminton, tennis and skiing, for years running the Toronto High School cross-country ski meets. Sailed in summer around Lake Ontario and cycled in Europe. He was passionate about fishing and an avid skier. Peter was a very special man, husband, teacher and friend to all who had the privilege of knowing him. He loved people and could talk to anyone, charming them with his wide knowledge and his wonderful British sense of humour. Inveterate traveler, he, with his wife, Brenda, travelled the world, seizing every opportunity to go somewhere new, twice taking a year off with round-the-world tickets. As much as he loved to see new vistas and have new experiences, the people he met on his travels were always more important than the sights. He had a way of putting people at ease and, to the last day of his life, maintained his cheerful outlook. A Celebration of Life for Peter will be held on November 29, 2023 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Clement's Church, 70 St. Clements Avenue (Duplex Entrance). Reception following at the church. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Salvation Army or a Charity of Your Choice.

My deepest condolences to you and your family, Brenda. I was greatly saddened to hear of Peter's sudden passing. It was such a pleasure to meet and spend time with you and Peter along with my folks last winter in the Algarve. Here are a couple of photos taken during the lovely walks we took together then. I greatly appreciated your kindness and good company; I would certainly hope for our conversations to continue, and our paths to cross again. Great big hug, xo Sarah

So sad to hear we have lost Peter and very sorry for your loss Brenda. He was a fine sailor and I and others of our sailing group enjoyed many a cruise with with him and Brenda around Lake Ontario some years ago.

Peter had a shining spirit and a deep and beautiful soul. We always looked forward to seeing Peter at events at our yacht club, because we would share books and stories and smiles. He was the best of us, and we will miss him more than words can say.
Anglican Bishop Brent wrote of that last voyage: "A ship sails, and I stand watching `til she fades on the horizon. And someone at my side says, `She is gone.´ Gone where? Gone from my sight, that is all...And just at that moment when someone says she is gone, there are others who are watching for her coming, and other voices take up the glad shout: `There she comes!´"
It is a blessing to know that, at the last, Peter went sailing, and is now there on that farther shore.
We express our heartfelt sympathy to Brenda, who was the love and light of Peter´s life. He will be forever remembered by all who knew him.

Such devastating news. Peter's unfailing friendship, his keen wit and sense of humour, his warm companionship and the many other qualities that made being in Peter's company so enjoyable made us very fond of being in his company, no less than being in the company of his wife Brenda. On our taking two past trips to Portugal, we had the pleasure of Peter's and Brenda's company for several days each time. On those occasions, Peter no less than Brenda seemed always genuinely interested to enrich our experiences there, driving us about and taking us to yet another restaurant, for example, all to make yet another day even better. Now, when we look at photos of Peter and Brenda that we took on those occasions, we can't help but feel keen sadness that we will not be able to enjoy Peter's company again. In time, although we don't think a tinge of sadness won't ever be far from our thoughts when we think of Peter's passing, we know we'll have many, many memories to draw upon which can't help but make us smile even now. Our hearts go out to Brenda: it was always wonderful to see what friendship and love they had for each other. Rest In Peace, Peter. Very, very fondly remembered.

In the brief span of 15 years, Peter graced our lives as a neighbour, transcending that title to become a cherished friend and mentor. His absence on our shared driveway, where his warm smile was a constant presence, leaves a void that is deeply felt. His memory will forever hold a special place in our hearts, and he will be greatly missed by our family. May God bless his spirit.

Peter will be fondly remembered as a gentle soul with a capacious mind and a sly sense of humor. He had a deep Anglican faith and a charitable disposition. He enjoyed life and brought much joy to others along his journey. We who knew him and share his faith look forward to seeing him again in a better world.

"And there's another country I've heard of long ago, most dear to those who know her, most great to those that know...and soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase, and all her ways are gentleness and all her paths are peace."

I was a roommate of his future wife, Brenda when she met Peter. Over the years we had had many wonderful adventures. Once I moved to Colorado, they would visit us and I remember some wonderful ski days. We also did a flotilla sailing in the Greek Islands with our son David, happy to have Peter and Brenda´s expertise. I have so many happy memories of our times with Peter and Brenda.

I remember CompSci `81 with Mr. Wells. Write your program in Fortran on cards with HB pencil and then put in card reader to run so one person in the class would go in the evening to UofT lab to get everyone´s paper output for the day. Make a mistake? Repeat the next day. If I recall, the last month of Grade 13 they installed a dumb terminal so we could key in our Fortran programs and eliminate cards ... game changer.

Mr Wells was an inspirational educator, humorous Brit, and genuine person.
