Matthew NELMS Obituary

August 2, 1995 - July 30, 2024 It is with heavy hearts that our beautiful, smart and beloved Matthew has been called by the angels. Dr. Matthew William Nelms fought his battle with cancer right until the end. He passed peacefully, surrounded by his loving family and his beautiful wife, Jessica. Although he was taken from us far too young, not a day went by where he did not do everything in his power to pursue his goals, challenge his cancer, and enjoy his life with Jessica, their dog, Ryder, and his family. He was predeceased by his grandfathers, Opa (Willem Rebel) and Poppy (Vernon Nelms). Survived by his wife, Jessica Nelms; parents, Dr. Maggie Rebel, David Nelms; siblings, Aiden (wife, Hayley Larkin), Maria and Brenden; and grandmothers, Nana (Ina Nelms) and Oma (Betsy Rebel). It was evident how much Matthew cherished his family, and they provided him with unwavering support and comfort throughout his journey. Matthew had a passion for helping others and dedicated his professional life to a career of serving his community. As a medical graduate from the University of Toronto, he went on to begin a residency in Anaesthesia. He was an Alpine ski racer, a dedicated student leader, a recipient of the prestigious Golden Stethoscope Award, and an inspiration to all who knew him. He never once let his cancer define who he was, or the life that he wanted for himself and his family; truly an inspiration to others battling this life shattering disease. Matthew was the type of person who went above and beyond for those in need, always being the first person to show up no matter the request. An integral part of his kind nature was to put others before himself and always give everyone the benefit of the doubt. This speaks volumes to who Matthew was as a human being and how thoughtful of a person he was to so many. Everyone who had the privilege of knowing Matthew can speak to his compassionate nature and will cherish his memory fondly, no matter when or where their connection began. Living life ferociously and without fear was a lesson Matthew shared with and inspired in those around him. A true adventurer at heart, Matthew was always eager to explore new horizons and embrace life's challenges with an open mind. Whether travelling, taking on daring outdoor adventures, or simply seeking out all the unique experiences the world has to offer, Matthew approached life with a level of enthusiasm and curiosity that serves as an inspiration to all those who love him. His love for living and making the most of every moment is something he has left instilled in his friends and family. Beyond these traits, one of the greatest losses with his passing is the love that Matthew gave to those close to him. He was an amazing brother, an exemplary son, the greatest friend, and a devoted partner. He loved all those he got to know, but his unwavering love for his dearest wife, Jessica, is something few are fortunate to experience. Their bond was and will continue to be a true testament to partnership, friendship and love, and Jessica's steadfast support was a comfort to Matthew throughout his illness. His memory lives on in the hearts of all those who loved him and his legacy will be carried on by the many lives he's forever impacted and will continue to. Visitation on Wednesday, August 7th, from 5-7 p.m. at Harris Funeral Home, 220 St. James St. at Richmond. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Peter's Cathedral Basilica, 196 Dufferin Avenue, London, on Thursday, August 8th, at 1:30 p.m. Reception to follow at the London Club.
