Ellen Bohr August 11, 1929 - October 20, 2023 We are heartbroken to share that our cherished mom left us on October 20th, six years to the day after her husband's death and on the anniversary of their marriage. She leaves behind daughters, Yvonne (Patrick) and Kathrin (James); grandson, Danny; grandniece, Kristina; nieces and nephews; and many friends who miss her more than words can tell. Ellen's life journey was exceptionally interesting. She appreciated every moment of it, fiercely loving her family (including the four-legged members), delighting in the individuals whose paths she crossed and the many beautiful places she visited. A proud polyglot, she loved learning about others' cultures. Our mother bore witness to nine and a half decades of history that had a profound impact on her worldview as a journalist, and later as a diplomat's wife. Her eventful life took her to all corners of the globe. Along the way, she had countless adventures which fill the pages of the delightful autobiographical tales she leaves as a legacy to us. She was a big-hearted, caring, generous, intelligent, beautiful, charming woman, to whom we owe a debt of gratitude for teaching us what is most important in life: the love of family and friends, the power of beauty and small kindnesses, an insatiable curiosity about the world, believing in the good in people and having compassion for and desire to help those less fortunate. We will be raising a glass of bubbly in her honour, accompanied by her favourite jazz at a celebration of life (date to be confirmed). For details, contact us at

Also, to the exceptionally caring nurses and doctors on the palliative unit at the Toronto Grace Health Centre. Should you wish to honor Ellen, please make a donation to the Centre for Holocaust Education and Scholarship, the Toronto Grace Palliative Care Program or the Canadian Multicultural Education Foundation.
